Exercise Tips When You Don’t Have Time to Exercise
When I tell people how beneficial exercise is and how much it can improve your health and just life in general. They rarely tell me that they disagree. What they tell me is “I just don’t have time!” Truthfully, I was no different,. But it is amazing how a life event can force you to do something that you would not do normally. For me, the health issues that occurred in my life made exercising an absolute necessity as oppose to an option. And as the old adage states, “necessity is the mother of invention”. Likewise, I found a way to get my exercise in regardless of whether I go to the gym or not. Here are some of the steps I took:
Taking The Stairs: This is one of the best ways to burn some calories. If you work on the 19th floor it is probably not a good move to go from the lobby to the 19th floor, but that does not stop you from getting off on the 14th floor and walking up the rest of the way. Trust me, after a week of doing this you will be surprised at the results.
Park Far Away: When you go to a store or restaurant. Do not circle the front of the establishment waiting for a parking spot. Park far away and walk up. This has two benefits. First, you will burn some calories. Second, you are guaranteed a parking space.
Take Mass Transit: Now this is dependent on where you are located, but typically using mass transit involves some walking. Now I can only speak for the Washington DC Metro area, where you have to do some walking to get to the metro rail or bus stop and in many cases the Metro is some distance from your destination. This has multiple benefits. You burn calories. You help the environment by not driving. And you save money. Gas is not cheap these days.
Exercise During Small Breaks: I work in the IT industry, so getting exercise in can be problematic, especially since I work at a computer most of the time. I use these opportunities to do abs crunches in my seat. If you do 100 while you are sitting. You will feel it later, believe me. Here are some other small break exercises:
- Push-ups and Sit-ups during Commercial Breaks: On days where I don’t get my workout in I will do sets of 50 push-ups (you do what you can, even if it is one) or crunches or bicycle kicks during commercial breaks while watching TV.
- Balanced Calf Raises: Now you won’t do this if you are self conscious because people are around, but if you are not self conscious, try this exercise. I do these while I am standing in line at the bank of grocery store, wherever.
There are alot of exercises that you can do that do not take that long to do. You typically need to get 30 minutes of exercise 3 – 4 times a week to see some significant health. You will be surprised how you can squeeze that into these small tips I gave you today. If you have an exercise that you do when you can not get to the gym, I would love to hear it. If any of this was helpful, there is more information on my blog. And Remember, Stay Healthy!! Your Life Depends On It!!
